Selected Bluegrass Academy Workshop Descriptions

SATURDAY

Demystifying Music Making - Martha Hills & Don DePoy

Move beyond the mechanics of your instrument to becoming a music maker!  Get away from tablature/chord charts and make music by ear, while developing your own style. Topics include: chord progressions, transposing, capo use, scales, chord construction, beginning back-up and fundamentals for making music with others.

Grass Roots: Fiddle Tunes, Ballads and Blues -  Seth Austen & Beverly Woods

Appalachian fiddle tunes, British Isles ballads and African-American blues songs were among the ingredients that melded to create bluegrass, a uniquely American music. We'll explore these roots through some traditional songs and tunes. Bring your instruments and voices. All levels.

Melodic Guitar Solos for Vocal Tunes - August Watters

Taking a break on a vocal tune requires a different approach than flatpicking fiddle tunes. We'll  cover scales, crosspicking, and the magic formula for building melodic guitar solos.

Rhythm Guitar - David Dillon

Learn how it's done from veteran David Dillon, assisted by Margaret Gerteis and Richie Brown, all of the Joe Val Reunion Band.

Clawhammer Banjo for the Bluegrass Banjo Player - Woody Pringle

A hands-on approach where you will learn how to frail, use different tunings, and play clawhammer banjo in an old-time or bluegrass jam. Guests include Rich Howick and Charlie Downey.

Bluegrass at Berklee - featuring faculty Dave Hollander, Mark Simos, and August Watters

Berklee College of Music students and faculty will explore what  Berklee has to offer to bluegrass players, songwriters, old-time players, and other contemporary roots-based musicians.

Introduction to Yodeling - Alan Kaufman and Suz Slezak

Learn the mechanics of yodeling including how to find your 'break,' how to find the best key to yodel in, and some very basic yodeling songs. We'll demonstrate yodeling technique for males and females, and 'harmony' yodels!

Improvisation Method for Mandolin - August Watters

Go beyond playing patterns, and build devices for improvisation using both chords and melody of the tune.

Bluegrass Fiddle Chord Workshop - Dave Reiner

Hands-on workshop on using chords (double stops) to improve your bluegrass breaks and fiddle tunes, to back up singers and other instruments, and to play harmony lines.  Handouts provided.

Introduction to Twin Fiddling - Alan Kaufman , Art Schatz and Suz Slezak

The instructors will demonstrate how to build a harmony line over a lead for twin fiddling. This harmony approach is also be useful to mandolin, guitar and banjo players. The workshop will be part demonstration and part instruction.

Four Exercises to Improve your Banjo Playing – Rich Stillman

Most of us hone our banjo technique by practicing songs. This workshop will offer a set of exercises that will improve specific aspects of your banjo playing.

SUNDAY

Twin Mandolin Method - Richie Brown & August Watters

Good twin-style leads are built similar to harmony vocals. We'll discuss the mechanics of building mandolin duets by ear.

Demystifying Music Making - Martha Hills & Don DePoy

(see Saturday description)

Instrument Petting Zoo - Martha Hills & Don DePoy
